“In 2014, the United States Department of Health and Human Services reported that 70 million adult Americans. Common digestive issues include gas, bloating, belching, diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain or distension, extreme fullness after eating and sour or metallic tastes in the mouth. These complaints are your body’s way of saying it needs help.  The help you need, however, goes beyond feeling more comfortable after meals. Sluggish digestion also robs the body of nutrients, which robs us of energy and undermines every aspect of well-being.

HOW DIGESTION WORKS
Foods are made of large molecules (macronutrients) called proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Tucked away in these large molecules are micronutrients like vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

Just as you cannot swallow an apple whole, your bloodstream cannot absorb these large molecules. Proteins must first be broken down into chains of three amino acids or fewer, carbohydrates into monosaccharides (single sugar units), and fats into singular fatty acids. As this occurs, micronutrients escape from their bonds so that they, too, can be absorbed.

Put simply, digestion is the process of breaking foods into its useful components. Enzymes are its tools.

ENZYMES

Enzymes are factors that allow chemical reactions to occur more quickly. Every enzyme is unique, and does only one specific thing. Each digestive enzyme plays only one small role in the overall digestive process. For optimal protein digestion, you need different types of protease enzymes that are active at different pH levels and break protein chains both at the ends and in the middle.

WHERE DO DIGESTIVE ENZYMES COME FROM?

Digestive enzymes come from two main sources. The first is foods themselves.
The second source is your own digestive tract (salivary glands, stomach, pancreas and brush border villi in the small intestine). As long as the enzymes in foods and those made in your digestive tract can achieve complete digestion, digestive distress is unlikely. Unfortunately, cooked or processed foods contain no active enzymes whatsoever. This means that to digest them, your body has to produce twice as many enzymes. Because we make fewer digestive enzymes as we age, this soon takes a toll and digestive inefficiency suffers.

The enzymes in raw foods begin to digest your foods as soon as you start to chew them. Their action continues for 30 to 60 minutes in the upper stomach before most of your own enzymes kick in. This makes digestion quicker. Speed is important because nutrients are absorbed at specific locations in the small intestine. If digestion is not complete when foods reach these locations, valuable nutrients are wasted.

DIGESTIVE ENZYME SUPPLEMENTS
Digestive enzyme supplements have been available for over 50 years. They have always, however, been “one size fits all.” Meanwhile, your own body produces enzymes that reflect the real world foods you actually eat.

If you eat 2000 calories on an Atkins type diet plan, you’ll get an average of 65 grams of proteins, 18 grams of carbs, and 43 grams of fats at each meal. On a Pritikin plan, you eat only 16 grams of protein, 7 gram of fat, but 133 grams of carbohydrates. On the Atkins plan, you need FOUR times more protein digesting enzymes and SIX times more fat digesting enzymes. On the other hand, with a Pritikin type plan, you need over SEVEN times more carbohydrate enzymes.

Digestive enzymes are not interchangeable. Proteases digest only proteins, carbohydrases* break down only carbohydrates and lipases reduce only fats. Thereby, there is simply no way that “one size fits all” can work.

REAL-ZYMES™: YOUR PERSONALIZED ENZYME SOLUTIONS
From Paleo to Keto to South Beach to Zone (and about a hundred others), Americans follow many eating plans. Fortunately, each of these fits into one of nine major, macronutrient profiles. By applying proprietary enzyme activity algorithms to these profiles, Pure Essence developed the world’s first personalized digestive enzyme supplements. This means that you can now you enjoy an enzyme supplement built specifically for the foods you actually eat.

At first glance, some of the plans covered by various formulas might seem to have little in common. For example, DASH, Mayo and Standard American Diets might be odd bedfellows. Certainly, the quality of the foods in these plans can vary, but because the amounts of proteins, carbs and fats they each provide are virtually identical, their enzyme requirements are the same.
