Many people don’t pay much attention to the protein they consume. Athletes understand the importance of protein but many consumers often focus on fats, carbohydrates and supplements and don’t understand how proteins exert their effects in human health. As more consumers are focused on improving their health, supplemental proteins are gaining in popularity.

In this interview with Tracy Kreider we will discuss the benefits of protein in human health. We will also discuss whey protein, one of the best supplemental sources of protein. We will explore the distinctions between sources of protein, and especially the benefits of whey protein produced in America. Like most things, not all protein and supplements are equal.

What is Protein?

  • Protein is one of the three nutrients found in food that the body requires in large amounts. Along with carbohydrates and fat, protein is essential for the human body.
  • Proteins are made of small compounds called amino acids. There are hundreds of amino acids that exist in nature, but the human body only utilizes 22 of them.
  • The human body can produce all but nine of the amino acids that it needs. These nine are called essential amino acids and must be consumed through food.
  • All foods contain differing combinations of amino acids, making a balanced diet essential. In general, animal proteins like meat, dairy, and eggs contain all the essential amino acids.

What does protein do?
Protein is the major building block of the human body. Its main job is to build and maintain tissue. According to the Whey Protein Institute, whey protein is particularly useful in the following ways:

  • Weight Management – Calorie for calorie, whey protein can help people feel full longer than carbohydrates or fats, while burning more calories in the process.
  • Wellness – Consuming a diet including whey protein helps to promote strong immunity and protect the health of active individuals.
  • Exercise Recovery – Consuming whey protein after exercise regularly can help build more lean muscle than resistance training alone.
  • Healthy Aging – Older Americans may be able to reduce age-related decline of muscle mass by engaging in resistance training and consuming higher than the RDA for protein.

Dietary protein varies greatly in both quantity and quality. Generally animal protein is considered a more complete protein, meaning that the amino acid profile includes all of the essential amino acids which are more readily bioavailable. Plant proteins are also useful, however, their biological value is lower. Vegans need to make sure they receive adequate protein in the diet.

Whey Protein
Country Life Vitamins manufacturers one of the best whey protein supplements. I have recommended it to friends and family members. It is the distinctions between products that make the difference. As a consumer you have to decide what is important to you. Do you care where the raw materials come from? Does having third party certifications give you more confidence? (Hint, it should.) Do you want to purchase from socially responsible companies? These are just a few of the distinctions you can make in the marketplace.

Here are some of the takeaway highlights:
BioChem Whey Protein Isolate:

  • Biological Value is 100. This is as good as it gets.
  • Local American Whey. Cows are pastured as much as possible and come from family farms.
  • Whey is Ultra-Filtered and Micro-Filtered. A process that removes fat, cholesterol and lactose without denaturing the proteins. This is done without heat, enzymes or chemicals.

Country Life Vitamins is a company that is committed to earning your trust and proving that commitment via 3rd party certifications. You can tell a lot about a company by the certifications it receives. Here is the Country Life timeline of certifications:

  • 2000 – Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
  • 2007 – Certified Green Renewable Energy
  • 2007 – Certified Vegetarian (85% of products) by the American Vegetarian Association.
  • 2008 – Certified Gluten Free
  • 2011 – Certified Kosher
  • 2013 – Certified USDA Organic
  • 2016 – Certified B Corp.
  • 2017 – Certified Halal

These and other third party certifications show a willing adherence to compliance with national standards and regulations. Country Life Vitamins wants their customers to know about this commitment to certification and transparency. The best companies are proud to talk about going the extra mile. Good companies strive for transparency and Country Life is a good example of those efforts. Companies should be able to show you why you can trust them to provide safe and effective products. Country Life is one of those companies that is working hard to earn your trust.
