Most of us know the importance of managing blood pressure. Long term high blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease and strokes. Many people use medications to manage high blood pressure and in some cases this is critical to reduce your risks associated with high blood pressure. But do not kid yourself, reducing high blood pressure by using drugs does not fix your problem. While it may reduce your risk, you are not closer to having healthy arteries and a naturally healthy blood pressure. This is where nutrition and lifestyle are critical.

A healthy blood pressure is dependent on a lot of factors and you need to evaluate your level of risk. What are the factors over which you have control? Which of them are you willing and able to change? If you focus on reducing your risk by improving your cardiac and arterial health, then you will discover the many nutritional compounds which can contribute to actual better health. Remember this key point: drugs will help manage the markers of your disease and this may reduce your risks in some way, BUT drugs do not help you have better arteries, or healthier blood, or stronger cardiac function. Only by nourishing your body, can you expect to maintain healthier cells, tissues and function.

Lower_BP_in_8_weeksIn this interview Dr. Stephen Sinatra discusses how to manage blood pressure naturally. As a metabolic cardiologist Dr. Sinatra is well qualified to discuss how you can use lifestyle and nutrition to naturally improve and maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Dr. Sinatra has decades of treating patients medically with a diet and lifestyle component. He has detailed his approach in the numerous books he has written. I have several other interviews with Dr. Sinatra and these would be very useful to you if you would like a broader understanding of natural cardiac health.

  • Fish Oil – critical for reducing inflammation
  • Magnesium – helps arteries relax
  • Vitamin K-2 – keeps calcium out of the arteries (and puts it in the bones)
  • Aged Garlic Extract – (this form of garlic is safe with blood thinning drugs)
  • Pyconogenol/grapeseed extract – helps maintain flexible arteries
  • Nattokinase – enzyme that breaks down fibrin in the blood

Here are some of the supplements for heart support (in addition to the above):

  • Carnitine – fuel for heart cells
  • CoQ10 – nature’s spark plug for generating energy
  • d-Ribose – foundational energy molecule for the heart
  • Hawthorn berry herb – perhaps the best herb for cardiac support

HeartMDInstituteAvoiding high blood pressure involves an integrative approach: establishing healthy habits such as a nutritious, anti-inflammatory diet and appropriate supplementation, weight management, exercise, and various mind-body techniques for emotional stress management. Quitting smoking and caffeine, and cutting down on alcohol, can help as well. Depending on how high your blood pressure is, possible pharmaceutical treatment may also be needed, as directed by your physician.” quote from HeartMDInstitute.
