141 – Boosting Your Brain Power – My Interview with Dr. Thomas Shea

PERCEPTIV is a supplement designed to support and improve cognitive health.

Dr. Thomas SheaBrain SupportCognitive decline is one of the effects of aging. There is always some slippage in memory and mental function as we age. Some loss is normal and expected and does not usually have any serious consequences. Clinical nutritional science has shown conclusively that supplements of specific nutrients can improve both structure and function of our brains. Brain cells have been shown to be very receptive to certain nutrients. A brain that is well nourished will always do better than one that is nutrient deprived.

In this interview Dr. Thomas Shea discusses his research at the University of Mass. at Lowell that led to the development of PERCEPTIV. This is another example of the kind of clinically studied products that give us confidence.

PERCEPTIV is a patented nutraceutical formula clinically proven to protect against the normal cognitive decline associated with aging while building the body’s natural defenses against cell damage. PERCEPTIV is the result of 20 years of research and 5 published university-directed independent clinical studies, with 2 additional studies to be published soon. The unique blend of vitamins and clinically researched nutrients needed to maintain cellular health and vitality in the brain was developed by neuroscientists in studies conducted by a leading U.S. university. PERCEPTIV provides a precise blend of ingredients and nutrients that support brain function. The patented blend of PERCEPTIV vitamins and nutrients has been clinically proven to provide better results than taking each nutrient individually.

About Dr. Thomas Shea

A life-long Massachusetts resident, Dr. Shea began his studies of the mechanisms that keep nerve cells healthy at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he demonstrated that even slight imbalances in normal metabolism can lead to degeneration and death of brain cells. He also demonstrated that this balance is more delicate in individuals with certain genetic predispositions including those that place individuals at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

In 1994, he relocated to UMass Lowell where he directs the Center for Neurobiology, where a team of professors, students and staff study brain health and neurodegenerative disorders. At UMass, he and his team demonstrated that certain combinations of vitamins and nutritional supplements could not only delay the progression of memory loss Alzheimer’s disease, but if started early enough, could actually improve memory and mood in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease as well at adults without dementia; these studies led to the development of over 30 Master’s degree recipients, and supervised over 20 undergraduate research projects, and has been awarded two patents on the components of PERCEPTIV.

He has been funded by, the National Institute on Aging, the National Science Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association the American Federation of Aging Research, and others. He frequently presents a wide range of seminars and workshops on the benefit of nutrition for age-related loss of memory that are appropriate for scientists, professionals and families at universities, hospitals, nursing homes and senior centers, and can be contacted in this regard at Thomas_Shea@uml.edu (978-934-2881). He has published over 300 scientific articles, trained 13 doctoral students,

Are you saying that after you stopped taking Prevagen that you had a memory setback and that the two are related? It worked while you were on it but something happened when you stopped? The two may or may not be related.

Prevagen and Perceptiv are different products. So they should not have the same effect. The only way to know if they are right for you is to try time and evaluate the results. The best product is the one that works best for you. That is your process of discovery. Some people have used them together.

It could be helpful to work with a health professional but that is not always possible and most doctors do not know these products. If that is the case you could call the companies and see if they can provide any guidance. But they will not be able to give medical advice but they may be able to tell you if what you experienced is a known side effect. Being as this is one event and one person it is hard to draw any conclusions.

Good luck and best wishes.
