One thing we are all interested in is better brain health. The structure and function of our brains is far more fluid than we once thought. I remember being taught that there was not much we could do about brain health. We were preached to by the medical profession that nutrition had nothing to do with brain health. Just eat the average american diet and you would be fine. The problems associated with cognitive decline we considered just normal aspects of aging. We knew little to nothing about how to improve brain function and what we could do to promote better brain health even as we age.

Cognitive brain issues are not confined to the elderly. We now know that brain health can affect a wide range of issues at any age. At any age we need to think clearly. In this interview, Dr. Kate Rhéaume-Bleue (Dr. Kate) will discuss some of the most important nutritional and lifestyle issues that can improve cognitive health. One needs to always consider certain lifestyle factors such as exercise, diet, positive mental habits.

Dr. Kate discusses 4 of the important nutrients for cognitive health support. There are many nutrients that can provide benefits for your brain. Each specific nutrient provides specific benefits. As you research the various nutrients, try to understand and appreciate the distinctions between nutrients and their effects. You need to understand what it is that you are trying to accomplish. It is not enough to only consider that it is good for brain health. You need to know why and how. Otherwise how to you evaluate the effects? And how do you choose from among all of the supplement choices to pick the ones most likely to help you. The ability to understand these distinctions will help you make better choices. Better choices leads to better outcomes.

Sources of Vitamin B12

B-12 – Methycobalamin – Even low levels of vitamin B-12 can contribute to sub clinical forgetfulness. Natural Factors B12 Methylcobalamin is the biologically active form of vitamin B12, the form most readily absorbed into the body. It is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for various bodily processes, including energy production, nervous system function, and production of genetic materials DNA and RNA.

  • Supports the nervous system
  • Helps memory and learning
  • Boosts energy
  • Helps control homocysteine levels
  • Promotes a healthy cardiovascular system
  • Enhances immune system function
  • Effectively supports brain and nerve function.
  • May help in the treatment of sleep-wake disorders
  • May improve daytime alertness in shift-workers and the elderly

PQQ – Pyrroloquinoline quinone – PQQ has antioxidant and B-vitamin-like activity, with a wide range of benefits for the brain and body. It promotes cognitive health and memory by combating mitochondrial dysfunction and protecting neurons from oxidative damage. It supports energy metabolism and healthy aging. Natural Factors BioPQQ is created using a natural fermentation process which enhances absorption.

PQQ protects cells from oxidative damage that can lead to cognitive decline, neurodegenerative disease, and cardiovascular problems. PQQ and CoQ10 work together to support the mitochondria, the cells’ energy producers. By protecting neurons and stimulating nerve growth in the brain, PQQ also supports cognitive performance, including memory and attention.

Omega-3

Omega-3 – New evidence shows that omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, are better “brain food” than we thought. In addition to their known benefits of supporting cognitive health and brain function, a recent study published in a 2014 issue of Neurology found that a higher omega-3 fatty acid intake may also increase the size of your brain. Researchers discovered this after measuring the brain volumes of 1,111 postmenopausal women and learning that those women with the highest blood levels of EPA and DHA also had the largest brain volumes.

Curcumin – Theracurmin is an advanced new formulation that unlocks the medicinal power of curcumin, the  yellow pigment found in turmeric.

  • Supports cognitive health
  • Regulates neurotransmitter function and cerebral blood flow
  • Enhances memory and concentration
  • Promotes a healthy inflammatory response for optimal health and wellness
  • Provides antioxidant protection from free radical damage

Laboratory research has confirmed that curcumin can reduce inflammation, provide antioxidant protection to cells, and reduce risk factors for chronic degenerative diseases, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. Theracurmin was chosen for Natural Factors to ensure a therapeutically effective blood level of curcumin that lasts for hours, providing potent antioxidant protection that reduces the risk of degenerative disease.
